Hull City Ladies are officially the FA WPL Northern Division One Champions! They secured the title this afternoon thanks to a fantastic 4-0 win over Mossley Hill. I think the fans were more nervous than the players as they put last week’s defeat behind them in some style and played Mossley off the park.
City Ladies came out of the blocks quickly as they looked for an early goal to settle any pre-match nerves. The first half chance fell to Nat Bell when Liv Jackson found Meg Render who cross for Bell but her first touch let her down. Katie Thompson then hit a shot just over the bar a few minutes later.
Mossley were battling for survival and looked to make an impact on the game themselves. Top scorer Amy Hughes had a shot in the 9th minute but it was an easy save for Amy Halloran in the City goal. The Tigresses almost opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Katie Thompson pressurised a Mossley defender into a mistake, that gifted possession to Hope Knight who then shot narrowly wide.
The half chances kept on coming, Sophie Stamp saw a shot go wide from the edge of the box before Amy Kay had to be on hand at the other end to clear a misplaced back pass when Amy Hughes looked to pounce. The Tigresses were dominating possession and made that count in the 21st minute. Hope Knight put pressure on a Mossley defender and won the ball from her before shooting across the goalkeeper, slotting her shot into the bottom right hand corner to give the Tigresses the lead.
The Tigresses deserved the lead and continued to create chances. A brilliant move should have resulted in the second goal when a cross from the right was headed just wide by Rachael Ackroyd. Liv Jackson then had a shot that went just over the bar, Hope Knight skewed a shot wide after good work by Ackroyd before Ackroyd herself was denied. She dinked the goalkeeper but a Mossley defender got back to clear the ball off the line! That was the final chance of an entertaining first half.

City Ladies’ main title rivals Brighouse Town were also winning at half time so we all felt the Tigresses needed another goal to be comfortable. A little under ten minutes into the second half the goals they needed came like London buses, two at once! Firstly in the 52nd minute Hope Knight got her second goal of the game. Meg Render picked her out with a brilliant cross and Knight made no mistake as she fired a shot past the goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
No sooner had the game kicked off again had City Ladies sealed the win and the title. They won the ball from the kick off and a neat pass to Rachael Ackroyd set her free, she went round the goalkeeper and put the ball into the empty net to make it 3-0 and we knew it wouldn’t be long before we could celebrate.
To their credit the Tigresses stayed disciplined throughout the rest of the game and kept their clean sheet. Ellice Jackman, Rebecca Beech and Liberty Bott all came off the bench and all made an impact on the game. In fact all three were involved in the final goal in the 86th minute and this was the best of the lot! Jackman swung in a cross to Beech at the edge of the box, her first touch was perfect to cushion it down to Bott who hit a first time curling shot into the bottom corner from 20 yards to make it 4-0. It was a brilliant goal and a late contender for the goal of the season award!
The Tigresses played out the final few minutes with ease and the final whistle sparked wild celebrations on the pitch. The Champagne was sprayed and it was brilliant to see the joy and relief on the faces of the squad, management and the fans. The Tigresses were fantastic today and from the first few minutes you just knew they were going to wrap up the title!
