Match Report Chorley 0-1 Ferriby

North Ferriby United enjoyed their third league win in a row when they shocked Chorley with a 90th minute winner in one of the toughest away games of the season. Some have labelled November the “month of death” for Ferriby because all five opponents (Nantwich, Marine, Chorley, Ashton and Hednesford) were in the top 7 at the start of November. With this win at Chorley, Ferriby have now won the first three matches in November and are proving they are the team to fear this season. Ferriby are now six points clear at the top and are taking points away from their nearest rivals.

This game started slowly with both teams enjoying equal possession. Neither team were creating chances and most of the match was contested in the middle third of the pitch. Chorley did have the first chance in the 17th minute. Adam Nicklin had to save with his feet and Ferriby were lucky to escape.

Ferriby had their first chance in the 25th minute when Ryan Williams shot low to the left but his effort went wide. Two minutes later Ryan Kendall had a chance for Ferriby when he had his low and powerful shot tipped wide by Chorley’s goalkeeper.

Ferriby now seemed to be on top and in the 33rd minute Chris Bolder crossed from the right but Anthony Wilson headed up and over the bar. The game was now pulsating and end to end with both teams creating chances. Chorley had the next chance in the 38th minute when Nicklin was happy to see Chorley’s shot fly over his crossbar. Nicklin was then alert to make a fantastic save in the 42nd minute.

The game exploded in the last five minutes of the first half. Firstly Anthony Wilson went one on one with the Chorley goalkeeper but fluffed his lines twice Chorley got lucky. Then in the 44th minute Ferriby left back Steve Ridley was sent off for a second bookable offence and suddenly it looked like it would be a long afternoon for Ferriby. That wasn’t the last action of the half either because deep into stoppage time Chorley hit the post and Ferriby were lucky to escape and went in at half time level.

HT 0-0

Even though Ferriby were down to ten men they started the better in the second half and were still creating chances. In the 58th minute Ryan Kendall beat a Chorley defender in the box and was through on goal, he shot from a narrow angle but Chorley’s goalkeeper did enough to tip the shot wide.

Chorley did have more possession because of the man advantage and they created various chances but a combination of a resolute defence and Adam Nicklin in the net kept Chorley out. Ferriby were playing excellently as a team unit and looked to have got themselves a hard earned draw. In the 90th minute however they got a lot more than a draw. The tireless Danny Clarke ran down the right hand edge of the box and was fouled. He swung the ball in and Anthony Wilson headed the ball towards the goal. Chorley’s goalkeeper parried the ball and it fell to Liam King. Without taking a touch he smashed the ball into the top left hand corner of the net. Every Ferriby player and fan went mad as they realised they had snatched a win.

Chorley did have a chance in stoppage time but the home fans were left moaning as they saw the Chorley header fly wide of Nicklin’s right hand post.

FT 0-1

This was a fantastic result for Ferriby especially with the winner coming in the 90th minute. Ferriby were elated Chorley were gutted but that is the way it goes. Ferriby will hope to conquer the next phase of the “month of death” away at Ashton next week.

Man of the Match: Liam King.
